Have you ever found yourself saying, “I don’t know where my money goes”? You’re not alone. Many people struggle with managing their finances and feel like their money seems to disappear as soon as it arrives. But what if I told you that budgeting is more than just a financial tool? It’s an act of stewardship, a way to honour God with the resources He has entrusted to us.
Deuteronomy 8:16-18 reminds us:
“He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
This passage is a powerful reminder that our ability to produce wealth comes from God, not from our own strength or efforts. It is a part of His covenant with us, and we must honour that by being good stewards of what He has given. As believers, we recognize that everything we have is a gift from Him, and therefore, we are called to steward it well. Stewardship isn’t just about managing our finances; it’s about managing everything God has given us, including our time, talents, and treasures, in a way that honours Him.
Stewardship is the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care. In a Christian context, it means managing our resources—money, time, and talents—according to God’s will. It’s acknowledging that we are not owners, but caretakers of what God has provided, and we are to use it for His glory and the good of others.
Budgeting is an essential aspect of good stewardship. It’s a practical tool that helps us manage our finances wisely, ensuring that we are not only meeting our needs but also using our money in a way that reflects our values and honours God. A budget is like a financial roadmap; it helps us direct our money to where it should go, rather than wondering where it went.
When we create a budget, we are taking an active step towards being good stewards. It allows us to allocate our resources in a way that aligns with God’s priorities, ensuring that we are using our wealth to serve Him and bless others.
Creating a budget that honours God involves more than just tracking expenses. It’s about making intentional decisions with our money that reflect our commitment to God and His Kingdom. Here’s how you can start:
At the heart of a God-honouring budget is the greatest commandment: to love God and to love people. As you plan your budget, ask yourself: Does this reflect my love for God? Does it enable me to love and serve others? When we prioritize God’s Kingdom and the well-being of others in our financial planning, we are fulfilling our role as stewards and living out our faith in practical ways.
Remember, budgeting is not about restriction; it’s about intentionality. It’s about using the resources God has given us in a way that honours Him and reflects His love to the world.
