Beyond Policies: Why a Trusted Financial Advisor Relationship Matters

Effective financial planning goes far beyond just charts and policies. True value often lies in the strength and trust of the relationship you have with your advisor, especially during life’s unexpected crises. This became incredibly clear to me through my experience with my client, Susan, and her family back in 2012.

A Sudden Crisis: When Viral Meningitis Struck

Susan, a valued client working outstation in China for many years, received distressing news. Her younger sister, Jane (34 years old), living in Singapore, had fallen seriously ill. What began as a persistent fever quickly escalated. After several GP visits without answers, Jane experienced bladder shutdown, followed shortly by a terrifying episode where her eyes rolled back. She was immediately admitted to the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Supporting My Client Through Uncertainty

Susan flew back to Singapore immediately, understandably distraught. One of her first calls upon landing was to me. Although I wasn’t Jane’s advisor, Susan sought support, and crucially, she trusted me. Without hesitation, I accompanied her directly from the airport to the hospital.

Navigating Hospitalization and Insurance Concerns

The neurological ward was confronting. Jane couldn’t recognise us amidst the difficult environment. We faced significant uncertainty about her condition, the length of her stay, and the potential medical costs. While we were unsure of her exact insurance coverage at that moment, we decided choosing a Class C ward was a prudent step to manage potential expenses. (Fortunately, we later confirmed she had a comprehensive Integrated Shield plan from that era which covered her bills).

My role during this initial period involved being present for Susan, attending doctor briefings with her, and offering a steady source of support while she navigated this stressful situation. As the elder daughter with less-resourced parents, the responsibility weighed heavily on her.

The Promise Kept: Ongoing Support for the Family

Before Susan had to return to China, I gave her and her family my assurance: “Call me anytime you need help. I will be here for Jane and your parents.” This wasn’t just a platitude; it was a commitment.

I continued visiting Jane throughout her recovery – two weeks at TTSH, two weeks in a community hospital. I provided a listening ear for her parents as they shared their worries, especially regarding the temporary cognitive effects of the illness on Jane, who was previously an auditor.

From Crisis to Friendship: The Lasting Impact

Jane thankfully made a full recovery and now thrives in a management position. But the impact of that difficult time extended beyond her recovery. A genuine friendship formed between Jane and me. We still connect daily, a testament to the bond forged during adversity.

What This Means When Choosing Your Financial Advisor

Jane’s story powerfully illustrates that while having the right insurance is vital, the human support system around you during a crisis is invaluable. It highlights critical questions to ask when choosing a financial advisor:

  • Do you trust your advisor implicitly?
  • Do you feel comfortable discussing not just finances, but life’s challenges?
  • Do you believe they would offer support beyond the policy details?
