Singapore Beckons Malaysian Income Investors

For Malaysian investors targeting robust dividend income from banks and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), looking across the causeway to Singapore can offer compelling advantages.

A primary benefit is the Singapore Dollar’s (SGD) historical stability and strength against the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). This can provide potential currency appreciation on top of dividends. Singapore’s REIT (S-REIT) market is also significantly larger, more liquid, and offers greater diversification than its Malaysian counterpart, often with strong historical performance. Similarly, Singaporean banks are recognized for their solid fundamentals and consistent dividend payouts.

The tax environment is another key differentiator. Singapore imposes no dividend tax or capital gains tax on individuals. Malaysia utilizes a single-tier dividend tax system, where corporate tax is considered final, meaning dividends distributed to shareholders were historically not subject to further personal income tax.

However, a notable change in Malaysia, effective from 2025, is the introduction of a 2% tax on dividend income exceeding RM100,000 annually for individual recipients, though some exemptions apply.

While Malaysia’s single-tier system was designed to prevent double taxation and the new 2% tax has a high threshold, Singapore’s straightforward zero-tax policy on individual dividend income offers distinct simplicity and potentially higher net returns, particularly for larger portfolios. Combined with currency and market depth advantages, Singaporean dividend stocks present a strong case for diversification.
