“Karen, can I just downgrade? The premium feels too high.”
Her husband had just passed a kidney stone. He was in hospital. She was stressed, the bills were coming, and the monthly premium suddenly felt like the easiest thing to cut.
I understood completely.
But I couldn’t say yes.

The thing about reviewing your health insurance rider when someone’s already sick
Here’s what most people don’t realise. The moment there’s a medical history on record, the conversation about your health insurance rider changes entirely.
It’s not just about comparing plan tiers on paper. It’s about what the lower plan actually covers given the condition that already exists. Those are two very different questions.
I looked at what she’d be left with. The lower-tier plan wasn’t going to hold up for his situation specifically. Not because it was a bad plan. But because his health had moved — and the plan she wanted to move to hadn’t accounted for where he was now.
So I told her that.
She pushed back a little. The premium really did feel high. I get it — when nothing’s happening month to month, that number feels abstract. Like you’re paying for something you never use.
But here’s the reality. You’re not paying for last month. You’re paying for the moment the thing you can’t predict actually happens. And by then, if the plan isn’t right, you can’t change it. That door closes.

Once you downgrade, going back isn’t simple
This is the part people don’t think about until it’s too late.
Downgrading is often a one-way decision. If you want to move back up later, you go through underwriting again. And if your health has changed — or your husband’s health has changed — that process doesn’t go the way you’d hope.
She wasn’t just deciding between two premium amounts. She was potentially closing a door that she didn’t know she might need open again.
I wasn’t trying to scare her. I just wanted her to see the full picture before she decided.

The question I always ask before any health insurance rider review
Not “which plan is cheaper.” That’s the easy question.
The real question is: what does this plan actually do for you, given where your health is today?
Because the plan that made sense five years ago — when everyone was healthy and the numbers looked fine on paper — may not be the right plan now. Medical history changes the calculation. Age changes it. A hospitalisation changes it.
A health insurance rider review in Singapore isn’t a form-filling exercise. It’s a conversation about what’s actually at stake for your specific family in your specific situation right now.

Why I told her not to downgrade
There was nothing in it for me either way.
A downgrade doesn’t help my numbers. Keeping her on the higher plan doesn’t make me a hero. I just looked at what she’d be walking into and I couldn’t let her do it without understanding what she was giving up.
She thought about it. She kept the plan.
Three months later, her husband was back in hospital.
I don’t say that to make a point. I say it because that’s just what happened. And I’m glad she had the right cover when it did.
If you’ve received a premium notice and you’re not sure whether to change your plan — don’t decide based on the number alone. Talk to someone who’ll actually look at your situation before you sign anything.
