A Friend’s Story: High Income, High Debt, and a Delayed Surgery

I’ve known this friend for about three years. When we first met, despite earning a high income, he was grappling with significant debt and diligently working to repay it. As a single dad with two children and an elderly mother living with him, his financial responsibilities were immense.

 

For years, he endured the pain of torn ankle ligaments. He didn’t dare take leave for surgery, fearing the potential costs and the impact on his already stretched finances. Painkillers and bearing the discomfort became his norm, his ankle often swollen.

 

Recently, however, his hand started affecting his work, making surgery unavoidable. He finally decided to address his long-standing ankle problem at the same time.

 

My Advice: “Check Your Coverage, Use a Panel Doctor!”

Now, I’m not his servicing insurance agent. But knowing his financial situation and the potential for medical bills to spiral, I felt a strong responsibility to offer some guidance. Surgery, especially in Singapore, can amount to a significant sum.

 

I repeatedly urged him: “Please, ensure your surgery is covered by your insurer. Make absolutely certain you go to a panel doctor and a panel hospital.” I emphasized the importance of getting pre-authorization if required and understanding any co-payment or deductible clauses.

 

He took my advice to heart and did his homework. He contacted his insurer, confirmed his coverage details, and made sure his chosen surgeon and hospital were on his insurer’s approved panel.

 

The $111,000 Reality Check – And a Sigh of Relief

Thank goodness he listened.

 

His ankle surgery, which involved just a one-night stay in the hospital, amounted to a staggering $111,000. And this figure didn’t even include the pre-operative consultations and post-operative follow-up bills.

 

He called me afterwards, immensely grateful. He admitted he never expected the bill to be so enormous. If he hadn’t done his due diligence – if he’d gone to a non-panel doctor or if the procedure wasn’t fully pre-approved under his policy terms – he could have been personally liable for a substantial portion, if not all, of that $111,000. Why “Just Having Insurance” Isn’t a Guarantee

This story underscores a critical point:

Not all doctors/hospitals are “in-network” (panel) for all policies. Going out-of-network can lead to drastically reduced coverage or even claim denial.
