For many Malaysians working in Singapore, one financial question comes up repeatedly:
“Should I keep my money in Singapore dollars or convert it to Malaysian ringgit?”
It sounds like a currency question.
But I think it is first a life-planning question.
Instead of trying to predict which currency will be stronger next year, start by asking:
Where is this money eventually going to be spent?
Imagine two Malaysians who both work in Singapore today.
Person A plans to settle permanently in Singapore.
Person B plans to return to Malaysia in 10 years, buy a home there and retire there.
Their salaries may be identical, but their long-term financial plans probably should not be.
This is what I call planning with the destination in mind.
If your mortgage, children’s education, retirement expenses and daily lifestyle are expected to be in Singapore, having a meaningful proportion of your assets in SGD or investments aligned with those future needs can reduce currency mismatch.
Otherwise, you may earn and save in one currency while eventually needing to spend in another.
The opposite also matters.
If you know you will eventually need MYR for a Malaysian property, parents’ expenses or retirement, holding everything in SGD forever may not necessarily be the right solution either.
You can gradually prepare assets for known future MYR liabilities rather than making one large currency decision at the last minute.
Be careful with this question.
Singapore’s monetary policy is centred on managing the Singapore dollar against a trade-weighted basket of currenciesto maintain medium-term price stability. MAS does not target a specific SGD/MYR exchange rate.
That means nobody should build an entire financial plan around an assumption that SGD must continue appreciating against MYR indefinitely.
Past currency movements are not guarantees of future movements.
For Malaysians earning SGD, I generally find it more useful to think about money according to purpose.
Examples include:
Keeping an appropriate amount in MYR reduces the need to constantly worry about short-term exchange-rate movements.
Examples include:
These liabilities naturally call for sufficient SGD liquidity.
Long-term investing does not have to become a simple “SGD versus MYR” decision.
A diversified portfolio can provide exposure to companies, bonds and markets across different countries and currencies.
The bigger question becomes:
What assets should I own to achieve my goals?
rather than:
Which currency should I bet everything on?
When SGD/MYR moves significantly, it is tempting to think:
“Maybe I should convert everything now.”
That is still a form of market timing.
A more structured approach is to match your money to its future purpose and convert progressively where appropriate.
For Malaysians working in Singapore, financial planning can become complicated because your income, citizenship, family, property and retirement destination may span two countries.
That is precisely why copying a generic Singapore or Malaysian financial plan may not be enough.
Start from your destination.
If your future is in Singapore, build accordingly.
If your future is in Malaysia, prepare accordingly.
If you are not sure yet, maintain enough flexibility that you do not have to make a permanent decision today.
Your financial plan should support where you want your life to go — not force your life to follow your money.
Will SGD continue strengthening against MYR?
Future bilateral exchange rates cannot be known with certainty. Singapore’s monetary policy manages SGD against a trade-weighted basket rather than targeting SGD/MYR specifically.
Should I invest in Singapore or Malaysia?
Investment location and investment exposure are different questions. A diversified portfolio may invest globally regardless of where the investment account is located.
