I had an enlightening dinner with two coaches last night.
They were sharing with me what coaching is about, the trade that they are doing, and why people will engage their service. Coaching is a powerful process centered on the belief that people hold the answers within themselves. A great coach doesn’t provide solutions; they ask the right questions to help clients unlock their own insights and potential. This is exactly where I see a fascinating parallel with artificial intelligence.
Just as a coach’s effectiveness is tied to the quality of their questions, an AI’s output is only as good as the prompt it receives. The principle is the same: garbage in, garbage out. A vague query to an AI will produce a generic or unhelpful response. But a well-crafted, specific prompt—like a targeted question from a coach—can lead to a highly relevant and insightful answer.
A human coach uses skills like active listening and powerful questioning to guide a client toward self-discovery. They help the client reframe a problem, explore alternative perspectives, and identify actionable steps.
Similarly, AI’s underlying algorithms, especially in large language models, function by analyzing the user’s prompt (the question) to understand the intent, context, and desired outcome. It then sifts through vast amounts of data to generate a coherent and relevant response. The more precise the prompt, the more focused and valuable the information retrieved.
While AI can be a remarkable tool for research, brainstorming, and providing data-driven insights, it cannot replace the essential human qualities of a coach. AI lacks empathy, intuition, and the ability to build the deep, trusting relationships that are the foundation of transformative coaching. It can’t feel the emotional nuances of a conversation or offer the kind of personal, lived experience that a human coach brings to the table.
In a world where we have instant access to information, the real value isn’t just in finding answers. It’s in the ability to ask better questions and, more importantly, to connect with others on a human level to achieve real and lasting growth. So let’s use AI as a powerful tool, but never as a substitute for the art of human-centered coaching.
