Most people do not leave any documentation detailing their digital estate such as online subscriptions and/or digital assets (think 💵 cryptocurrencies, 💱 NFTs). Hence, upon their death, it is doubtful one’s family member will think about the deceased’s digital estate until accumulated unpaid bills find their way to them. It is, therefore, imperative to do so, especially in wills as this will (pun intended) come in handy for the deceased family members to settle matters easily with the relevant organisations.
A recent Straits Times article highlighted that as digital services are increasingly becoming intertwined with people’s lives, there are more queries on handling their digital assets in legal documents such as wills. Unfortunately, the take up rate is still on the low side. Optimistically, as the younger generation who are more tech savvy consider preparing their wills, this trend may grow.
If you consider including digital assets or online accounts in your will, it would be extremely helpful to provide specific and vital information so that the exact account(s) can be located, and organisation(s) can be contacted expeditiously. This helps prevent fishing expeditions undertaken by lawyers or family members which can be time-consuming and hence costly. In addition, with the immense and rapid rise in online scams, it is extremely important not to leave digital assets/accounts unattended, to prevent identity theft and incurring further charges.
